Life Fitness App & Equipment UI

Business Initiative

Life Fitness, a global leader in commercial fitness equipment, needed to improve the usability and engagement of its mobile app and connected equipment UIs. The existing experience was fragmented—users struggled to connect their devices, track progress, and move between mobile and in-gym screens without friction. This disconnect negatively affected satisfaction and retention across both B2C and B2B customers.

The initiative focused on creating a unified experience that connected digital and physical touchpoints—bringing consistency, clarity, and motivation to users before, during, and after their workouts.

My Role, Team, and Timeline

As Senior UX Designer, I led the redesign over the course of a year, working closely with product managers, engineers, writers, researchers, and analysts in an agile environment. My role covered user experience strategy, visual design, and design system integration across both mobile and embedded console interfaces.

I also helped standardize Figma as the core design tool across the organization—establishing a scalable component library that improved collaboration, version control, and design consistency among distributed teams.

Design Process

I began with a full audit of existing user flows for both the Life Fitness mobile app and the connected equipment UI. Research insights from surveys, user interviews, and analytics revealed key friction points: inconsistent navigation, unclear workout tracking, and confusing Bluetooth pairing steps. I collaborated with researchers to synthesize these findings into clear opportunity areas and journey maps.

From there, I redefined core workflows—simplifying the sign-in process, refining workout summaries, and creating intuitive equipment connection flows. I developed new interaction models and visual hierarchies for hardware screens that improved visibility, accessibility, and ease of use during workouts. Prototypes were tested with both gym members and trainers, validating design decisions before implementation.

Working alongside product analysts, I supported multiple A/B tests and usability studies to measure performance improvements. Each round of feedback directly informed design iterations, ensuring every change delivered measurable impact on engagement and retention.

Outcome and Impact

The redesigned experience unified the Life Fitness ecosystem, delivering tangible results across both mobile and in-gym interfaces:

  • Increased overall user engagement by 30% after launch
  • Improved user satisfaction scores by 20% in post-launch surveys
  • Reduced app-to-equipment connection errors and support tickets
  • Standardized design workflows across global product teams using Figma

The result was a more cohesive, motivating fitness journey that empowered users to seamlessly track progress and stay connected across devices—helping Life Fitness strengthen loyalty in a competitive digital fitness market.
